************************************* * * * DB/C Newsletter * * January 2001 * * * ************************************* News and Comments We have given up on majordomo, the email list server software that we had been using since November for distribution of this newsletter. We have also been having problems with the IMAP interface of the email software on the dbcsoftware.com LINUX computer. Email is critical for us to be able to provide good support for DB/C software. So after some testing, we decided to replace both majordomo and the email software with ComminicateGate Pro, an email and list server product from a company called Stalker Software, Inc. (That's a name I wouldn't have chosen, but it is easy to remember.) Our initial experience with this software has been great. Its administration is handled by a web interface that is really slick. It has features galore and so far we've not found any problems. There really is a difference between commercial and free software! If you received this newsletter by email, it was distributed using the new software. The big news this month is that on February 1st we are moving the DB/C Software Company corporate offices to a new location, separate from Subject, Wills & Company and from ProducePro, Inc. When we have completed our move, we'll post our new phone number and address on the www.dbcsoftware.com web site. During this move, the DB/C Online Sales and Update System and email should not be affected because the dbcsoftware.com computer is located at an Internet hosting center in downtown Chicago. We still haven't started official beta testing of DB/C FS 3. Feature creep and the distraction of moving offices are the primary causes of the delay. The most important feature that we've decided to add before starting beta testing of DB/C FS 3 is encryption and authentication of the protocol that is used between the client and the DB/C FS server. Several customers have told us that this is an important new feature for them. Additionally, we've committed to adding encryption and authentication to the Smart Client protocol in a future release of DB/C DX. We've had several requests to provide the sample code to show how to send email with attachments directly from a DB/C program. This would expand on the existing sample code that was described in the November 1999 DB/C Newsletter. We had hoped to have the sample code ready for this newsletter, but we've been really busy this month, so it's not ready and there isn't an article this month. Hopefully, we'll have the email with attachments sample code ready for next month's newsletter. don.wills@dbcsoftware.com ****************************************************************************** DB/C Class Schedule Class: DB/C DX and JX Language Fundamentals Date: June, 2001 Location: To be determined For information, send email to admin@dbcsoftware.com ****************************************************************************** Subscribing to the DB/C Newsletter If you don't already have the DB/C Newsletter delivered to your email address and would like to have it emailed to you when it is produced, just send an email message to 'request@dbcsoftware.com' and put the line 'subscribe dbcnews' in the body of the email message (omit the ' characters).
