The topic of this month's newsletter is 'dbcterm', a new software product from Subject, Wills & Company. It is available now. The PL/B Standard has been forwarded to ANSI. It is expected that they will approve it within 60 days. don.wills@swc.com dbcterm Subject, Wills & Company is introducing a new software product called dbcterm. This program is a telnet client program for use on Novell NetWare based MS-DOS workstations. The dbcterm program is similar to other telnet programs, but it includes additional features that provide more functionality when used with DB/C. The DB/C programming language provides two features that are not supported by other telnet programs. These two features are subwindowing and support for 16 colors (8 regular colors and 8 bold colors). The dbcterm program provides complete support for these features. Many UNIX systems are being configured today with MS-DOS workstations. These workstations are connected with the UNIX host via Ethernet, but act like dumb terminals. The telnet protocol (on top of TCP/IP) is the protocol used between the UNIX host and the workstation. Performance is usually excellent because the connection runs at Ethernet speed. There are several telnet programs available for this environment (some of them are even free). Unfortunately, they all work by emulating real dumb terminals like the VT320 and others. Existing telnet emulators for color terminals typically support only 8 colors and don't support the concept of subwindow scrolling or erasing at all. To get around the lack of subwindow support in a dumb terminal, DB/C will display characters in each position of the subwindow to erase or scroll the subwindow. This will cause flicker and is less than optimal. There is no work around for the lack of 16 color support. With dbcterm, DB/C is able to provide 16 color support and subwindow manipulation without flicker. The dbcterm program works only with the Novell NetWare LAN WorkPlace for DOS TCP/IP stack. The telnet server can be any telnet server. All UNIX systems include the telnet server as a normal part of the operating system. The price for dbcterm is $149 for the first workstation license and $30 for each additional workstation. A company-wide license is available for $1500. DB/C Class Schedule The next DB/C class is scheduled for January 23-26, 1995. The class is held in the Oak Brook, Illinois office of Subject, Wills and Company.
