This month's article is an overview of its new features. don.wills@dbcsoftware.com ****************************************************************************** DB/C FS 3.1 DB/C FS 3.1 is a maintenance release that contains several new features. These features were added in response to user requests. Here is a list of the new features of DB/C FS 3.1: . The port number and direction of the secondary (data) connection between the client and server is controlled by the secondary port number parameter, "sport=", in the dbcfs.cfg file. This allows DB/C FS 3.1 to function in those situations where a firewall or NAT does not allow outbound connections from the server or inbound connections to the client. More information about this feature is found in the October 2001 DB/C Newsletter. . DB/C FS 3.1 allows the method of locking during SQL DELETE and UPDATE to be specified in a configuration parameter. The "deletelock=record" and "updatelock=record" configuration parameters in dbcfs.cfg cause a record lock to be obtained before the respective DELETE or UPDATE action occurs. The "deletelock=file" and "updatelock=file" parameters cause a file lock to be obtained before the respective action occurs. A record lock corresponds with a DB/C DX record lock and a file lock corresponds with a DB/C DX FILEPI lock. . The "preppath=" configuration parameter in dbcfs.cfg causes files to be created in the named directory by default. . Encryption can be turned off and on in the DB/C FS 3.1 Win32 ODBC driver without having to reinstall the ODBC driver. A checkbox in the ODBC Control Panel provides this capability. . Continuous contact is maintained between the DB/C FS client and server. This allows for connections (processes) to be terminated whenever a client does not respond to a server contact message within 60 seconds. This can occur when a client computer is abruptly turned off or it loses its TCP/IP connectivity to the server. . The space reclamation feature is now supported for SQL INSERT and DELETE. Space reclamation was ignored in DB/C FS 3.0 for these SQL statements. . The SQL SELECT "NOT IN" and "NOT BETWEEN" operators are supported in DB/C FS 3.1. . Support was added for CRLF and EBCDIC file types. . Column labels can now contain commas and right parenthesis characters. . Minor enhancements were made to the ODBC interface including better support for looking up data dictionary metadata (table and column definitions) with wildcards, and support for escape sequences in date, time and timestamp values in WHERE clauses. ****************************************************************************** DB/C DX Class Schedule Class: DB/C DX Fundamentals Date: September 16-18, 2002 Location: Oak Brook, Illinois For information, send email to admin@dbcsoftware.com. ****************************************************************************** Subscribing to the DB/C Newsletter If you don't already have the DB/C Newsletter delivered to your email address and would like to have it emailed to you monthly, just send an email message to 'dbcnews-subscribe@dbcsoftware.com'.
