************************************* * * * DB/C Newsletter * * June 2003 * * * ************************************* News and Comments This month's newsletter is just random bits of information and commentary that may be of interest to you (i.e. there is no article this month). Beta testing of DB/C DX 13.0 for all platforms continues. If you are interested in participating, let me know. We have added a new option for purchasing support subscriptions for DB/C DX and DB/C FS. You can now choose the number of months (from 6 to 24) to extend support. This new order processing feature may be helpful for coordinating the support expiration dates for multiple licenses or for budgeting purposes. Many of you may know that I'm a big fan of the Apple Macintosh. Apple recently announced its new line of computers based on the IBM PowerPC 970 chip which Apple calls the G5. In single and dual processor configurations, the G5-based Macintosh systems are similar in both price and performance to the fastest available Dell Pentium and Xeon based systems. However, it is the stability, ease of use and overall elegance that set the Macintosh apart from other computers. DB/C FS 3.1 for Mac OS X is available now and DB/C DX 13.0 for Mac OS X will be available when DX 13.0 is released. As a followup to the February 2003 newsletter article about patents, I've just read of a newly-issued and particularly ridiculous patent granted to Netflix. The essence of the patent is renting N number of DVDs per month or N number of DVDs at any point in time for a fixed price. The US Patent Office has broken new ground for idiocy on this one. It is patent number 6,584,450 which can be reviewed at www.uspto.gov. Several books about Eclipse have been released. The book titled "Eclipse In Action" by David Gallardo and others is excellent. It provides an introduction to using Eclipse. Although several chapters are useful only for Java developers, other chapters are useful for development in other programming languages including DB/C. I will be attending the O'Reilly Open Source Convention in Portland, Oregon July 9-11. Among the keynote speakers is Paul Buck, Director of Eclipse Development at IBM and previously President and CEO of OTI before it was bought by IBM. Other keynote speakers include Mitch Kapor and Larry Wall. I'll give you a report about the conference in a future newsletter. Send me an email if you are attending and want to get together to chat about DB/C or whatever.
