************************************* * * * DB/C Newsletter * * October 2004 * * * ************************************* News and Comments There are now almost 50 subscribers to dbcmarket. I've been surprised that so few email messages have been posted there. Exactly two commercially oriented emails have been posted, and I posted one of them noting that we were running the DB/C DX Fundamentals class on short notice the week of October 18. At the cost of being redundant, I'll again extoll the virtues of the dbcmarket email list. It's a great way to reach others in the DB/C community if you're looking for software, looking for work, or looking for someone to do work for you. There is no article this month - just a few tidbits of news and comment. EclipseCon 2005 will be held the first week in March at the Hyatt Regency at San Francisco Airport. I reported on EclipseCon 2004 in this newsletter last February. I expect that EclipseCon 2005 will be even bigger and better. Although it is targeted more for developers like those of us at DB/C Software Company than it is for application developers, there might be some utility for the readers of this newsletter to attend EclipseCon 2005. I'll be there, so if you do attend, be sure to make contact with me. The software patents problem continues to grow. Fortunately, some organizations are starting to take action. The Electronic Frontier Foundation (EFF) is a leading voice in the movement to reform the software patent process. The EFF has made a list of their "Ten Most Wanted" patents that they consider to be the most harmful. I urge you to read the information at the EFF "Patent Busting Project" web page. It is very enlightening. That web page is: http://www.eff.org/patent/index.php We are considering the possibility of holding a DB/C Software Technical Conference next year. The conference would consist of both tutorial and informational sessions about DB/C DX, DB/C FS and related technologies. If you are interested and/or have some suggestions for location, topics, and timeframe, please contact me by email. don.wills@dbcsoftware.com ****************************************************************************** DB/C DX Class Schedule Class: DB/C DX Fundamentals Date: First quarter, 2005 Location: to be determined For information, send email to admin@dbcsoftware.com. ****************************************************************************** Subscribing to the DB/C Newsletter If you don't already have the DB/C Newsletter delivered to your email address and would like to have it emailed to you monthly, just send an email message to 'dbcnews-subscribe@dbcsoftware.com'.
